SNAP/EBT Eligibility and How to Apply in 2026
A plain-language walkthrough of who qualifies for SNAP benefits, what you need to apply, and how long it takes to get approved.
SNAP — formerly known as food stamps — is the largest food assistance program in the United States. It puts money on an EBT card you can use at grocery stores, farmers markets, and many online retailers. Here's how to apply.
Who qualifies for SNAP?
Eligibility is based mostly on household size and gross monthly income. As a rough guide, most households earning under about 130% of the federal poverty line qualify. Some states allow higher limits. Students, seniors, and people with disabilities have separate rules.
What documents you'll need
- Photo ID for the head of household
- Social Security numbers for everyone applying
- Proof of income (pay stubs, benefits letters)
- Proof of housing costs (rent or mortgage)
- Utility bills
How to apply
You can apply online, by mail, or in person at your state's SNAP office. Most states process applications in 30 days. If you have almost no income, you may qualify for expedited SNAP within 7 days.
Where you can use SNAP/EBT
Most grocery stores accept SNAP — including Walmart, Costco, Kroger, Aldi, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Target. Many also let you use SNAP for online grocery delivery. Browse SNAP/EBT-friendly stores near you.
