What a food pantry is
A food pantry is a local site — often run by a church, community center, school, or nonprofit — that gives away free groceries. Most are supplied by a regional food bank (a large warehouse that sources and stores food). You don't pay anything, and in almost every case you don't have to prove income.
Three fast ways to find a food pantry near you
- Search FoodCycled by ZIP. Browse food pantries by state or use the search page to find the closest verified locations.
- Dial 2-1-1. Free, confidential, 24/7. Works from any U.S. phone. A specialist will point you to same-day food, mobile pantries, and emergency boxes.
- Use Feeding America's locator. feedingamerica.org/find-your-local-foodbank maps the closest member food bank to your ZIP.
What to bring
- Photo ID (driver's license, state ID, passport, or school ID).
- Proof of address if you have it — a piece of mail or a utility bill.
- Household size — the number of adults and kids living with you.
- Reusable bag, box, or small cart.
You usually do not need pay stubs, tax forms, or proof of citizenship. See our full pantry checklist.
What you'll typically receive
Most pantries hand out 3–7 days of groceries per visit: shelf-stable items (rice, pasta, canned beans and vegetables), fresh produce when available, bread, dairy, and sometimes frozen meat. "Choice" pantries let you pick items off shelves; "pre-packed" pantries hand you a ready-made box.
How often you can visit
Most pantries allow one visit per household per month, though many allow more in emergencies. If you need food this week and you've already used a pantry this month, try a different pantry or call 2-1-1 for a same-day box.
